Project 4 Storyboard

For my project I was thinking of trying to animate the poem "O' Me O' Life" by Walt Whitman.

Here is the poem:

Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,
Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d,
Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me,
Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined,
The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?

Answer. That you are here—that life exists and identity, That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.

The main thing I wanted to do was have time-lapse videos of various scenes that go along with the content of the poem. Along with this time-lapse footage I wanted to animate text over the top of it, and possibly narrate it myself or have someone else do it.

My illustrating skills are pretty poor but I tried to show what it might resemble. The last screen will be all black with white text and I imagined it being pretty dramatic. I'm aiming for a 45 second run-time.

  1. I really like your idea and I really like the poem! I think the poem will call for the time to be more than 45 seconds but there isn't a time requirement or limit so either way it'll work.

  2. Nice poem choice, it does seem like it might take closer to 1:00-1:30 to animate effectively though.

  3. I'm very excited to see the progression of this! The poem is so deep. I could foresee challenges in trying to visualize certain elements. But the thought you have put into it thus far, seems like it could work well.

  4. Gosh what a beautiful poem. The thing about poems is to not try to illustrate the idea. I actually approach everything as a poem, although I am certainly no poet. It forces me to solve the problem metaphorically.
Lots of possibilities with After Effects Time Remapping. Could even play with online resources like the nevada nuclear test site footage you can get in high rez. The trick with video is to find a way to use either effects or filters to move it more into Motion Graphics and not have it just be a straight video project. Having said that, the first step is video production and straight cutting in Premiere to gather your beauty shots. Nice process. Have you ever seen Koyaanisqatsi?
